| The African Council for
Communication Education (ACCE), a non-profit-making non-governmental
organization was formed 1975 with funding and support from UNESCO.
Initially, it acted as an association of Heads of Schools of Journalism
and Communication on the African continent. The association later
transformed itself into the only regional organization of Africanist
communication scholars and practitioners in Africa. Currently, its
headquarters is located in Nairobi, Kenya.
ACCE is a scholarly and professional Pan African organization charged
with the responsibility of promoting journalism, development of
communication resources in Africa and creating awareness among African
policy makers and planners on the role of communication in national
development.
Its activities over the years include communication research,
training, workshops, seminars, documentation. In addition, ACCE
publishes books, monographs, a journal (Africa Media Review), occasional
papers as well as a newsletter (Africom). In July 1983, ACCE established
the Institute for Communication Development and Research (ACCE/ICDR)
whose main task is to implement the above activities.
The aims and objectives of ACCE are:

To promote communication
education and development through: Workshops, seminars, courses and
consultations at local, regional and continental levels

To assist in curriculum development at
the request of African communication educational institutions and to
encourage the circulation of the various curricula and course
designs among the institutions |

To assess the common needs of
educational institutions and generate common solutions to those
needs |

To evolve a system of accreditation
for African communication educational institutions |

To facilitate staff and student
exchanges |
 |
To encourage communication research
within Africa |
 |
To collect and disseminate information
on media development, research and training |
 |
To promote awareness among African
governments on the role of communication in national development.

The ACCE has individual and institutional membership and incorporated
80 communication schools and Media institutions in 30 African countries.
It also embraces over 300 communication researchers, scholars and media
practitioners who constitute its individual members. ACCE has membership
in the following countries:

The highest body of the ACCE is the General Assembly, which meets
after every two years during our biennial conferences. Its tasks include
the drafting of general policy guidelines and programs direction for the
organization and electing the Executive Committee. The Executive
Committee chaired by the President makes policy decisions. The current
president is Prof. Ikechukwu Nwosu from Nigeria. |
